Ownership of Performance - Webinar Question on 12/19/06

At our company, everyone works on performance when they have to, but no individual or group owns performance in a proactive way. What is the benefit [of having such an individual or group]?

One thing I can tell you is that the sites I've seen that have such a person or group have far fewer performance problems than sites that don't have such a person or group. The existence of such an entity of course does not absolve all the other groups of all performance responsbilities. On the contrary, a person or group responsible for performance serves to view performance across the entire technology stack (I talk about this early in the Optimizing Oracle Performance book where I show the smokestack picture) and ensure that the right people are working to fix the proper root causes of the problems that might negatively impact the business.
