Bad Code and Performance - Webinar Question on 12/19/06

I am tired of supporting bad code released into production. Our production support group is too small to fix all the required changes. Development does not want to take on additional workload for testing. What would you recommend to fix this situation?

This sounds like a political or institutional problem more than a technical problem, but technology can make the problem easier. My first suggestion is to help the organization recognize that the product development department is the organization in your company with the most leverage against performance problems. For an in-depth treatment of this issue, see http://www.hotsos.com/e-library/abstract.php?id=141.

If the word "all" in your question is what's stopping others from helping, then I would recommend ranking the fixes by their perceived value. Meausre the impact to the business and estimate how much you think it would cost to fix it. Then let someone decide which ones to fix and which ones to leave alone. Don't try to give a long-unranked list to development.

But if testing is what's stopping folks from helping, then make it easier for them to test. There are lots of ways to automate the tedious tasks.
