Database and Layers - Webinar Question on 12/19/06

What value does Hotsos provide if all it shows is the database and not the correlation to the other layers?

I’ll assume this is a question about the Hotsos Profiler specifically. In the Hotsos Profiler output, you can see every database call the application makes, the details of those database calls, and details for every operating system call the database calls make. From this information, it’s easy to diagnose not just database and SQL-related problems, but also problems with applications that use the database inefficiently (which is very common), and problems with OS-level configuration issues. In our experience, this information covers nearly 100% of the problems we encounter in the field. In the small fraction of problems that we cannot diagnose and repair with the Hotsos Profiler, we are at least able to prove when the problem is NOT in the database (or anywhere in the OS below it), or the SQL-related code path in the application.
